Anacostia Watershed Society

The mission of the Anacostia Watershed Society is to protect and restore the Anacostia River and its watershed communities by cleaning the water, recovering the shores, and honoring the heritage. AWS offers three primary programs: Environmental Education and Teacher Training, Stewardship and Restoration, and Advocacy.
AWS is seeking a funding strategy project to clearly identify resources needed as tied to the strategic plan, identify stable and new sources of revenue, and think about the best way to mobilize internal capacity to get
the job done.

Annapolis Symphony Orchestra

The mission of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is to produce and present memorable symphonic music that increases the awareness, enjoyment, and appreciation of music for audiences of all ages throughout the region.

The Annapolis Symphony has requested a strategic alignment project. With the organization’s 50th Anniversary approaching in 2011, combined with current economic challenges, the Compass team will work with ASO to renew their strategic goals and plans so that they are best positioned for increasing their audience and ensuring their own sustainability. (Note: This team will meet in Annapolis.)

The Arc of Northern Virginia

The Arc of Northern Virginia is known as the leader in providing effective advocacy and indispensable direct services for families, children and adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enable full, welcoming community participation.

The Arc is seeking assistance to improve board development, communications, and utilization. They have asked Compass to review their Board structure and make suggestions for improvement, which may include revising bylaws, identifying criteria for Board membership, creating new committee structures, and more.

Bridges Public Charter School

Bridges is a unique public preschool whose mission is to educate together children with and without special needs. Bridges is one of three free public charter schools educating preschool children with the highest level of disability, level four.

Bridges has requested a board development project to improve the board’s effectiveness and engagement with
a solid foundation in governance, training, committee structure, and meeting and committee policies.

Capital Partners for Education

Capital Partners for Education is a dynamic, four-year, college preparatory and mentoring program serving motivated, low-income students in the DC area who might not go to college without CPE’s programming and individualized support.

CPE has requested a strategic alignment project. CPE will embark on a new strategic planning process this year to identify viable options for program expansion. They are interested in increasing the number of students they can serve, while reducing the cost per student of current programming.

Class Acts Arts

Class Acts is an arts outreach organization dedicated to bringing educational and culturally diverse arts experiences to schools and communities in the DC metro area. Class Acts’ paid performances help fund outreach to venues that cannot afford to pay, such as low-income schools or programs for youth in correctional settings.

Class Acts has asked for a funding strategy project. In this economy, foundations and schools have fewer budget dollars to pay for Class Acts’ performances. The staff at Class Acts wants to research and analyze creative ideas for earned income ventures that would remain aligned with their organization’s mission.

Community Lodgings

Community Lodgings mission is to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence and self-sufficiency. Community Lodgings offers transitional housing, a youth education learning center, and a community outreach program.

Community Lodgings is requesting board development assistance to make the board more comfortable with relationship cultivation, fundraising, and effective leadership. The Board’s effectiveness will help Community Lodgings become more efficient, and allow them to grow to serve more homeless families and at-risk children.

Through pro bono strategic consulting, Compass strengthens the capacity, effectiveness and sustainability of Greater Washington DC nonprofits. Compass volunteer teams, mainly MBA alumni from top business schools, guide nonprofit leaders to generate near-term gains and long-lasting organizational improvements.

Compass needs a funding strategy project. Compass wants to analyze options for earned income ventures that would be consistent with Compass’ mission of bringing business professionals and nonprofits together. The team may consider ways that social media can be used as a fundraising tool, as well as the possibility of implementing new programs.

District Alliance for Safe Housing (DASH)

DASH provides a safe and sustainable refuge for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. They offer emergency and transitional safe housing. Through technical assistance and training, DASH also facilitates access to housing programs and private housing so survivors have more safe-housing options
available to them.

DASH is seeking a strategic alignment project. DASH was established in 2006 and is currently operating under an 18-month work plan. They have grown rapidly and need help charting the best path ahead. They would like Compass to provide strategic planning facilitation and to create a formal three-year strategic plan. They are also interested in strategic planning best practices.

Greater Prince William Community Health Center

The Greater Prince William Community Health Center provides primary, affordable, health care services to families in Greater Prince William County, regardless of income, age, race, residency, and insurance status.
In 2008, 4,000 patients were seen with approximately 8,000 encounters. In 2009, the number is expected to increase to 6000 patients with 18,000 encounters.

Currently implementing a three-year strategic expansion, the Health Center will the double in size by 2012 and provide three new services: dental, mental health and prenatal. To support this growth, the Health Center has asked Compass to help them develop a funding strategy to include best practices for fundraising, a proposal template identifying the Health Center’s differentiating factors, and recommendations for the Board to become more involved in the fundraising process. (Note: This team will meet in DC or northern Virginia.)

The Helen Hayes Awards

The Helen Hayes Awards programs and services are designed to build audiences, honor excellence, and educate youth – all in celebration of professional theatre in the Washington metropolitan area.

The Helen Hayes Awards is seeking strategic alignment project to help the organization develop a clear strategic plan to guide its operations for the next five years. The planning process will help the HHA better understand their core values, the programs that are most useful to their target audience, as well as build commitment from internal and external stakeholders to the goals and programs of the organization.

The Kingsbury Center

The Kingsbury Center is a leading-edge provider of education assessment for individuals with learning differences. Through their tutoring center, K-12 day school and diagnostic and psychological services,
unit they serve almost 1,500 people a year.

Kingsbury needs help in developing a strategic planning process in order to assess their current leadership structure, organizational mix and size, and relationship with the DC Public School system.

The Lab School of Washington

The Lab School provides education to children and adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities. They work not only with the students but also with their families and professionals to enhance the services available to their students.

With a new Head of School in place following the sudden death of the Lab School’s founder, the school is looking to develop its first strategic plan. This will be the second year of a two-year project to help develop a strategic plan. (Note: There will be limited spots available for new team members.)

Language ETC

Language ETC’s goal is to provide high-quality English language and other basic education, access to technology, and life skills programs regardless of ability to pay.

LETC is requesting a funding strategy project to help analyze new sources of funding such as corporate sponsorships and/or individual micro-giving campaigns or other viral marketing that will allow LETC to fundraise through Web 2.0 social media platforms.

National Child Research Center

An independent preschool serving Washington families for generations, the National Child Research Center (NCRC) provides preschool education in an environment that nurtures the whole child, fosters partnerships with families and is committed to the inclusion of children with special needs. Both within and beyond the school community, NCRC seeks opportunities to advocate for all children and their families.

NCRC has requested a strategic alignment project. Having recently completed a major renovation of the school (which completed their last strategic plan), NCRC is ready to explore new opportunities afforded by their expanded space, but within the context of challenges such as affordability of tuition, attracting and retaining outstanding faculty, paying debt services, developing cutting-edge programs, and increased service to the Washington DC community.

Oatlands is dedicated to advancing historic preservation by preserving the past and engaging the future through a variety of dynamic educational and cultural experiences. Oatlands provides visitors with the opportunity to see a preservation laboratory in action.

Oatlands has requested a funding strategy project to evaluate current revenue sources to determine if existing funding sources can be increased and to identify new revenue sources. (Note: Team meetings will be in Washington, DC, not Leesburg.)

Reality provides affordable treatment for St. George’s County’s chemically dependent and dually diagnosed populations, regardless of ability to pay. Reality’s residential programs provide individuals the psychosocial education and skills they need to become productive members of society.

Reality has requested Compass’ new service line – Refocusing, Restructuring and Contingency Planning – to examine and revise their newly developed strategic plan in light of the current fiscal and staff situation created by the economic downturn. (Note: Team meetings will be in Washington, DC or nearby Maryland.)

SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia

SCAN of Northern Virginia’s mission is to promote the well being of children, improve parent-child relations, and advocate for children in the community, the legislature and the courts. SCAN seeks to accomplish this mission through three programs 1) the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program in Alexandria and Arlington, 2) the Parent Education Program, and 3) the Public Education Program.

SCAN has asked Compass to help develop a five-year strategic plan and SCAN’s strategic planning capabilities to improve the organization’s ability to address new challenges, strategically pursue expansion opportunities, and sustain the organization’s health and community impact into the future. Potential project deliverables include stakeholder surveys, review of community needs, facilitating a Board/staff retreat to reach consensus on the vision, and a strategic plan document.

Synetic Theater

Synetic Theater enriches the theater offerings in the metropolitan area through its unique, highly acclaimed theater productions. Synetic offers four programs: a) main stage professional productions, b) a family series of theater performances,  c) a dramatic arts education program for children, and d) educational outreach program for underprivileged students.

Synetic Theater is seeking a comprehensive strategic plan covering artistic, fundraising, marketing, and business goals for the next 5-10 years along with an implementation plan, staffing recommendations, and related infrastructure requirements. This will be the second year of a two-year project.

The Treatment and Learning Centers (TLC)

TLC’s mission is to improve lives and expand possibilities for individuals with special needs. TLC serves clients through an independent school (preschool through 12th grade), testing and tutoring services, vocational assistance for adults, outpatient speech and occupational therapy services, child care and a summer program.

With a new executive director in place, TLC has requested a board development project to help the board develop their skills and increase their impact.
