Chief Operating and Financial Officer
Joan has more than 25 years executive level experience leading the development, growth, and strategy of nonprofit and for-profit organizations. She is highly skilled at managing financial operating and driving major change initiatives across complex organizational structures. She has worked extensively with nonprofit Board of Directors and executive leadership in the healthcare, education, environment, and agriculture sectors.
Prior to joining Compass as Chief Operating and Financial Officer in January 2020, she led a strategy team at the Pew Charitable Trusts and was responsible for redefining the organization’s international operating strategy and for establishing a shared-services model to support Pew’s $300M organization.
Before Pew, she managed her own consulting firm for more than a decade and provided strategy and program evaluation services to a wide range of clients, including the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, National Geographic, the US Naval Institute, and Public Radio International. She also tenured with Booz Allen and led the restructuring of a $30B federal healthcare organization. During her earlier career, Joan was Vice President of Business Development for Time Life where she successfully launched new businesses and managed financial operations ranging from $15M to $800M.
Joan has a BS in Economics and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
