AI Support for Nonprofits
Tools, Resources, and Live Trainings
Nonprofits are navigating unprecedented challenges in the sector. At the same time, AI-powered technologies are creating unprecedented opportunities for nonprofit leaders to scale up their impact while simultaneously reducing burnout and turnover on their teams.
New educational resources on AI are emerging every day. But as a nonprofit leader with little time to spare, it can be exceedingly difficult to know where to begin—or where to go from there. Compass Pro Bono can help.
AI Programs for Nonprofits
Our “low bono” AI programs are structured to give nonprofits disproportionate value for a low cost. Due to the highly variable nature of AI integration across organizations, program fees are scope-dependent and determined on a project-by-project basis. All of our AI programming is generally designed for nonprofit leaders and staff, but we understand that board members, volunteers, and other supporters can play a critical role in mission delivery. We’re more than happy to tailor the work to your unique audience—just ask!

Topic-Specific AI Lecture
Equip your team with actionable insights designed to empower them to experiment purposefully and engage in the org-wide dialogue on AI.
How it works: Our in-house AI expert meets with your leadership team to identify the most pressing educational needs for your team based on your current stage of AI integration. Then, he presents a lecture (typically 60-75 minutes) focused on 1-2 of these topics: AI best practices, AI change management, and AI ethics.
Customized Survey + AI Workshop (or Series*)
“Check the temperature” on AI integration at your org—then meet your team’s most pressing needs with education + facilitated dialogue.
How it works: Our in-house AI expert works with your leadership team to design a tailored org-wide survey, then deploys it to your staff. Survey results surface trends in sentiment around AI, familiarity with AI tools, current AI usage/ROI, gaps in existing infrastructure, and fears/concerns with AI’s impacts on the workplace or communities you serve.
All of these lessons become the framing for our workshop, which typically includes:
→ Discussion of real-world examples of AI in the sector / your issue area
→ Introduction of practical AI tools relevant to your org’s work
→ Tactical walk-through of AI change management infrastructure
→ Technical best practices for workplace use of AI tools (+ activities/demos)
→ Facilitated discussion/workshopping of org-specific AI use cases, norms, etc.
→ Answers to common hesitations/ethical questions about AI use
After the workshop, we leave you with a resource guide for continued learning (incl. the workshop deck/recording) and deploy post-workshop surveys 1-6 months out to assess staff-level impact and ongoing needs.
*A workshop series can be designed to cover multiple functional areas (e.g., research, teaching, and grant writing) or angles on AI integration (e.g., sustainable change management, ethical questions, and technical best practices).
Outcomes:
→ Team is more comfortable with + literate in AI
→ Team has a common language for discussing AI applications
→ Team has a grasp of real-world uses of AI in other, similar organizations
→ Team understands how AI can support your org’s work in a mission-aligned way
AI Integration Sprint
Build a robust, responsive infrastructure to support your team through thoughtful AI integration and enable staff-driven innovation.
How it works: After a complimentary survey/workshop (see above for details), our in-house AI expert spends 8 weeks meeting with your leadership team and individual contributors to identify and practice high-value individual- and team-level uses of AI. The project concludes with a close-out workshop focused on moving forward with values-aligned AI integration, drawing on individual contributors’ ideas and executive priorities surfaced in the weeks prior. Your organization emerges with a slate of customized “take-home” resources—an AI policy, use case library, integration roadmap, Custom GPT instructions, and more—intended to make the execution of your AI strategy as smooth as possible.
Outcomes (in addition to AI workshop outcomes):
→ 2-3 high-ROI AI solutions are designed based on institutional needs
→ Internal channels and resources for AI experimentation are created
→ Staff champions are equipped to guide ongoing adoption and habituation process
→ Individual contributors are confident and moving on AI adoption in their functional “lanes”

AI Transformation Residency
Designed for maximum impact. Build a strong culture of AI learning and implement high-ROI AI initiatives to become an AI-native organization.
How it works: Our in-house AI expert stations helps lead a multi-month effort to build a culture of learning and implement high-ROI AI initiatives, essentially operating as a fractional Chief AI Officer. We also tag in guidance from professionals across our network based on organization-specific needs (e.g., AI governance, data privacy, workplace wellness, and more). In addition to all of the deliverables included in the AI Integration Sprint, this option includes a cyclical process of workshops, team- and individual-level support, and AI system builds; biweekly AI debriefs focused on best practices, relevant feature updates, and practice challenges; biweekly “AI Office Hours” for live troubleshooting on staff’s tactical AI roadblocks; and regular AI landscape surveys to assess progressively increasing value from AI tools.
By the end of the Residency, your org will be able to:
→ Serve as a model and resource for peer organizations in the sector
→ Independently evaluate and implement new AI tools without external support
→ Articulate AI’s role in mission delivery to funders, partners, and other constituents
→ Demonstrate measurable time and cost savings driven by AI adoption
→ Maintain ethical, secure, and equitable AI governance practices
→ Scale staff-level AI innovations across the organization sustainable
Individual Coaching for AI Champions
Equip staff with the skills & knowledge to use AI more effectively in their own work and to help others at your org do the same.
How it works: Most organizations lack meaningful staff capacity for AI strategy. This option is designed to infuse whatever time is available for this work with structure and purpose. Over 75 minutes, our in-house AI expert trains designated “AI champions” in our tested methodology & frameworks for leading teams through sustainable AI integration, from use case ideation and literacy-building to change management. We leave you with a custom action plan, resource sheet, and session recap packet (including the recording, notes, and demo materials).
