Since 2022, Marketing & Business Development Specialist Connie Sinclair has volunteered on multiple Compass projects. She has supported funding strategy, strategic marketing, and fundraising projects for nonprofits including the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project and Pathways to Housing.
Connie describes each engagement as a chance to practice client-facing consulting and project management while staying grounded in the day-to-day constraints nonprofits face. She says Compass has allowed her to “continue to hone skills and use skills that I developed in my nonprofit tool belt.”
Connie’s experience is echoed by her colleagues. Another Hogan Lovells volunteer shared, “Being able to provide the extra time and capacity to think through some truly impactful questions, and then to analyze data with clear eyes, feels like I’m giving them a gift that can potentially help them chart their course for years to come.”
It’s also an accessible path for attorneys and non-legal staff alike to meet Hogan Lovells’ pro bono and responsible business expectations through skills-based volunteer work that’s directly relevant to their careers. Compass volunteers build practical consulting and leadership skills, like scoping work, managing stakeholders, and presenting recommendations.
Compass handles nonprofit vetting, project design, and team matching, and provides clear deliverables, training, and ongoing guidance. That structure lets Hogan Lovells employees plug into high-impact work without building the infrastructure internally.
Over the past three years, Hogan Lovells employees have contributed 3,890 hours and nearly $850,000 in consulting services to local nonprofits through Compass Pro Bono.
Global Practice HR & Talent Leader Eveline Shum sums it up: “I wanted to volunteer again because I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience last year. Compass Pro Bono organizes highly skilled professionals and provides all of the tools to quickly get involved, […] a way to lend a hand, lead a hand-picked team, and serve.”
For Hogan Lovells, Compass Pro Bono delivers what matters most: meaningful professional development for employees, a stronger connection to local communities, and measurable impact for nonprofits—all in one partnership.
