Hallie Smith, Senior Advisor for Program Innovation at Compass Pro Bono, has been part of the organization since 2013, beginning as a volunteer before serving two years on the board, where she chaired the development committee. She joined the staff in 2016 and served as Executive Director of Compass Greater Washington until 2023.
In her current role, Hallie drives efforts to advance Compass Pro Bono’s strategic goals, focusing on refining and standardizing processes across cities and programs while developing innovative solutions to meet internal and external stakeholder needs. She is passionate about building and nurturing a high-impact team committed to delivering exceptional results and strengthening the organization so Compass can effectively and consistently serve all its communities.
Hallie was instrumental in launching Compass’ On Demand program in 2020, connecting hundreds of local nonprofits with skilled volunteers who provide urgent support. She has also expanded Compass’ reach by developing new service lines in Technology, Data & AI Strategy, New Ventures, Decision Support, and Organizational Performance and HR Strategy. Over the past decade, Hallie has helped mobilize thousands of professionals to support local nonprofits. She has seen firsthand how these collaborations strengthen organizations and communities, and that impact continues to inspire her dedication to Compass Pro Bono’s mission.
Hallie began her career in public service with the Senate Appropriations Committee. After earning her MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, she joined Deloitte’s healthcare practice before transitioning to global HR, where she managed partner admissions and compensation and oversaw the firm’s expatriate program. She graduated with honors from Colby College, where she majored in International Studies and East Asian Studies. Hallie’s professional path has also been shaped by years of volunteering with local nonprofits. Those experiences deepened her appreciation for the value and importance of community organizations and were just as significant as her early career roles in drawing her to Compass.
Outside of work, Hallie loves to travel, especially on hiking adventures, read and talk about books, cook, raise dahlias, and spend time with her family, dog, and friends.
